MEMORANDUM FOR THE PRESIDENT
Subject: Ambassador Messersmith
At Ambassador Messersmith's request, I
have asked him to return to Washington to have
an operation performed at the Naval Hospital in
Bethesda. For personal reasons he asked that it
be done in this manner to avoid embarrassment on
his part. He is returning at his own expense
and will be placed on sick leave after reaching
Washington.
It is not expected that he will be absent
from his post very long.
