Paraphrase of message from General Marshall in Brazil to
State Department, 23 August 1947
Termination date for conference still under discussion
Facing heavy pressure of majority who want to speed up the work and
desire of local government to delay closing until September 5th and
a couple of recent proposals by Ecuador and Mexico, which would
result in endless debate but which we all believe can be by-passed
Monday. If the conference is finished by the end of the month, I
see no difficulty whatever in making arrangements for Monday, September
lst, as desired by the President (That means that the signing of the
agreement could take place on Monday, probably early Monday, and leave
time for the reception on the Missouri in the late afternoon)
I will advise you Monday night (August 25th) of what has happened
following our meetings on Saturday and Sunday (today and tomorrow)
and plenary session late Monday evening. End.

ARRICODROS,
