WASHINGTON
MEMORANDUM FOR THE PRESIDENT
The United States Embassy to the Netherlands -
from November 1944 to March 1947.
Stanley K. Hornbeck, appointed American Ambassador
to the Netherlands in succession to the Honorable
Anthony J. Biddle, was sent by the Department to London
in November 1944 to present himself there to the
Netherlands Government which was at that time function-
ing "in exile".
Mr. Hornbeck was assured by several officers of
the Department of State that as soon as he had presented
his credentials and had time to acquaint himself with
the current situation as regarded Netherlands' affairs
he would, within a few weeks, be recalled to Washington
for consultation, to receive up-to-date instructions,
and to have opportunity to assemble and ship such equip-
ment as he might wish to have with him in London and
later in The Hague.
Mr. Hornbeck presented his credentials to Queen
Wilhelmina, in London, on December 8, 1944.
