DEPARTMENT OF STATE WASHINGTON August 8, 1946 MEMORANDUM FOR THE PRESIDENT Subject: New Zealand Regrets in Connection with Statement of Cabinet Minister Your attention is invited to telegram no. 414 of August 5, 1946, from the American Minister at Wellington reporting criticism by The Honorable Robert Semple, New Zealand Minister of Works. A copy of this telegram is attached for your convenience. Also attached is a copy of a letter received from Mr. John S. Reid, in charge of the New Zealand Legation in the absence of the Minister, expressing the regrets of the New Zealand Prime Minister in respect of the comments of Mr. Semple, as well as a copy of a press statement issued in New Zealand by Mr. Semple retracting his statements and publicly apologizing for them. I have written to Mr. Reid expressing my thanks for his letter and informing him that the message from the New Zealand Prime Minister has been conveyed to you. Mr. Semple's remarks appear to have received no publicity in the United States and, in these circumstances, it would seem unnecessary to give his retraction and apology to the press. Enclosures: Telegram from Wellington, no. 414, of August 5, 1946. Acting Secretary From John S. Reid, New Zealand Legation, dated August 5, 1946. Press statement by The Honorable Robert Semple, New Zealand Minister of Works.
