-2- The political importance of Czeehoalevekin, the vital strategic location of Frague, and the high esteen of the American people for the Gzechoslovak descoratie system make it imperative that the agreement for 00- operation between the United States, Great Britain, and the Boviet Union be carried out in connection with the liberation and rehabilitation of CaeohosIovakin rather than permit the Soviet Union to continue ite exclusive control over this sost important area in Central Europe. As the factors which have enabled the Soviet Union to gain exclusive control of all of the other states of Eastern and Central Europe are not yet present in Czecho- elovakin the Department of State believes that Pregue is an excellent ground to test the promise of the Soviet Government of tripertite cooperation as it is the only one of the capitals of Eastern and Central Europe which has not as yet been occupied by the Soviet Army, and which could probably be occupied by us before the Soviet forces arrive there. The success or failure of coopers- tion in Pregue will have e profound effect on our entire position in Central Europe which would be immensurably strengthened by our occupation of Prague. The Department of State firmly believes that the interests of the United States will best be served by the immediate occupa- tion of Frague and supports the urgent request ande to this effect by Prime Minister Churchill and Foreign Seore- tary Eden.
