MEMORANDUM FOR HONORABLE MATT CONNELLY:
Dear Matt:
The President may be interested in a conversation
I
had with Justice Frankfurter about midnight last night on
the Palestine report.
Justice Frankfurter, as you probably know, is
perhaps the most prominent supporter of Palestine in public
life today among the Jews, and has been for many years. The
great Zionist leader in this country and in the world, for
many years, was Justice Louis D. Brandeis. Frankfurter and
Brandeis had been intimate friends for many, many years.
Frankfurter said to me, after reading the report, "I have
only one regret". My heart sank a little bit and then Frank-
furter continued, "My regret is that Justice Brandeis did
not live to see this report. He would have called it a
miracle". Then Frankfurter launched into a tirade against
Silver and the other Zionist leaders who, he says, prefer a
Jewish State on paper rather than doing something real for
human beings.
I asked Justice Frankfurter if he had any objection
to my quoting him on this and he said he did not and he would
be glad to have me do so. You may be certain that I will use
this to the limit with our friends in New York the next couple
of days.
