hhg by all of his Moslem colleagues as well as by all Moslem leaders in India, on the question of continued Jewish immigra- tion into Palestine. He said that he believed that the United States overlooked the fact that the policy we were advocating affected the hundred million Moslems of India as well as the Mohammedans of the Arab countries. He justified this state- ment by stressing the strong religious and cultural ties that existed among all the Moslem peoples. He stated with great feeling that his people felt "wronged" by the United States attitude, and that we must remember that there could be no true feeling of friendship between the United States and his people as long as we adhered to the position we were taking. He also made the usual criticism that the United States had no right to demand that another country change its domestic policy with respect to immigration, particularly when we were not prepared to do so ourselves. At the conclusion of this talk Liaquat Ali Khan said, however, that he was not going to allow his feelings to lead him to vote against our air agreement because he felt that if he and his Moslem colleagues did so they would be "biting off our nose to spite our face". He also went so far as to say that one of the reasons for which he wanted a commercial air agreement between India and the United States was that he hoped it would result in bringing many more Americans to the Middle East and India, and that he knew that as soon as NATIONAL -2- ARCHIVES AND SERVICE"
