The Extent of British Participation in the Palestine Fighting
In view of the information heretofore received by the President
that the British had, within the last few days, unloaded an entire shipload
of munitions for the Arabs, further details on this subject may be of inter-
est.
In
the House of Commons on May 25th and May 26th, Mr. Bevin was
asked about the extent of British participation in the Palestine fighting,
and in particular, the extent to which British officers were being used
with the Trans-Jordan Arab Legion.
According to the dispatch of May 26 in the New York Times of May 27,
Bevin said that although a few British officers had been in the Jerusalem
fighting, they had been withdrawn. The report in the New York Times of this
Bevin statement was followed by this sentence:
'NATIONAL
ARCHIVES AND
"A message to The Times of London, written in Jerusalem at
RECORDS
SERVICE"
1 P. M. today, Palestine time, said that a British major
"commands" the bombardment of the hospice of Notre Dame and
other buildings in the Holy City and "other British officers
are with him."
The same dispatch to the New York Times also says that a report from
Amman is to the effect that there were no British officers in Jerusalem; this
dispatch was evidently only a fraction of what the reporter tried to send, as
his entire dispatch on the point was evidently censored; the New York Times
brings out this fact.
