THE WHITE HOUSE
WASHINGTON
November 25, 1947
MEMORANDUM FOR: THE PRESIDENT
Bob Lovett called and stated he had
talked to our people at Lake Success. Our
delegation has taken the position in discussing
the Palestine situation with other nations that
our interests in the steps being taken by the
United States are based on "belief and conviction."
Bob said that our case is being seriously impeded
by high pressure being exerted by Jewish agencies.
There have been indications of bribes and threats
by these groups.
In the case of Liberia, certain groups
have informed the Liberian delegation that if they
do not go along the Stettinius pact with Liberia
will be cancelled. In the case of Nicaragua, the
delegate was told by some of these groups that if
he went along these groups would see to it that they
were recognized by the United States.
Lovett feels strongly that you shouldn't
discuss this matter with anyone and he believes that
everything consistent with good taste and courtesy
is being done by our delegation at Lake Success.
