THE STATUS OF PROPERTY RESTITUTION IN EUROPE Introduction. - The rate of reconstruction of Jewish life in Europe will depend upon the rapidity and extent of property restitution. The restoration of Jews to their positions and properties is essential not only as a moral vindication of the principles involved in this war but also as an indispensable economic base upon which Jews can resume their normal existence. The following is a brief review of the status of restitution and reinstatement in the various countries of Europe insofar as it can be ascertained from the press and reports available. France All anti-Jewish laws were annulled by the French Pro- visional Government. The Jewish Telegraphic Agency (JTA) of December 4, 1944, reported that "the French Government today published the text of a new Law providing for the integration into public services of former officials who were ousted because they were Jews or members of so-called secret societies. Jewish sources here estimate that at least 2,500 Jews will be reinstated as a result of this Law.
