"The United States is now insuring the military neutralization
of Formosa, 11 the President went on, "and we will try to keep Formosa
from falling into communist hands. We can't let that happen. Formosa
is on our left flank, and we can't let it fall. We will provide military
assistance to the Chinese Nationalists and we will keep air and naval
forces there to defend Formosa.
"We have been furnishing a great many supplies to you in
Indo-China to fight these Chinese communists and we will continue to

Mr. Acheson said the President had stated our attitude on

communist China very clearly and it would be difficult to add anything
to it. He did, however, want to fill in some of the background.
When the North Koreans invaded South Korea last June, Mr.
Acheson said, it seemed to the President and to his advisers that it
was a deliberate, calculated thrust. It was done to shake the confidence
of the people in Asia in the progress the free nations had been making.
In Japan, there had been very real progress. There had been good progress
in the Republic of Korea. The French had been making fine progress in
