perfectly honest with you. At first, we thought maybe the Chinese
didn't want to see large United Nations forces nearby, in Korea, and
we thought maybe that is why they crossed the river. But since they
crossed the 38th Parallel, and went on into South Korea, we reached the
same conclusion about the Chinese communists that you did. We will
support the United States resolution on aggression in the United Nations.

The President responded, "Thank you very much."
Mr. Pleven said that his government viewed the situation in the
Far East as a moral question as well as a military one. Like the
Americans, France did not want to be drawn into the Far East so deeply
as to endanger Europe. But France, like the United States, could not
think of giving up to the communists in the Far East.
Unfortunately, Mr. Pleven went on, France couldn't give the
men fighting in Tndo-China the same strong air support that the United
States was able to give in Korea. It was just as badly needed in
Indo-China as in Korea because the Viet Minh are armed by a steady
stream of equipment from the Chinese communists. France was eager to
build up the Viet Namese just like the United States was building up
for
