TOR SECRET - 2 - The President opened the meeting by stating: "I'd like to start the conference off by telling you how much I a appreciate your coming here to see me. I am glad you are here. I am especially glad since you come from Kansas City! (This was a reference to the fact that Mr. Pleven, as a young man, worked for a short time in Kansas City, Missouri, ) The President said he would like to ask the Prime Minister to designate a member of his party to work with Mr. Bohlen and Mr. Short on the communique. The Prime Minister said he would ask Mr. Parodi and Mr. Alphand to represent him. The President said that they should also appoint an economic subcommittee which could report to the full conference on Tuesday after- noon. Assistant Secretary Willard Thorp was already at work on economic questions and he would be the President's representative. The Prime Minister said that he would have Mr. Alphand and Mr. TRUMAN Daridan represent him. NATIONAL ARCHIVES & RECORDS REVENUE ADMIN The President then said he thought that the Prime Minister U.S.COVERNMENT might like to take up the Far East and discuss his attitude on questions relating to Far Eastern affairs. The President noted that our countries have common interests in the Far East and he would like to hear the Prime Minister's views. TOP IOD SEORET
