Mr. Pleven replied that that might be true, but that if
we had refused to talk with the Russians the harm would have been
very great.
He wanted the President to understand that the Four Power
talk, no matter how it went, would have no effect on the French de-
termination to rearm. But he wanted to say again that a refusal to
meet with Russia would have had so great an adverse effect on the
French people that he could not possibly think of refusing to meet
with the Russians.
The President looked at his watch, and told Mr. Pleven he
was aware that the Prime Minister had a speaking engagement at the
Press Club at One O'clock. He thought that we would have to adjourn
this morning's meeting, but we would all be back together again at
three.
Mr. Pleven replied, "Mr. President, I was not afraid of
meeting you, but I am very much afraid of meeting them (the American
press)."
The President laughingly replied that the Prime Minister had
no reason to be afraid of the members of the National Press Club.
The meeting adjourned at 12:35 P.M.
