In regard to the allegations that a reign of
political murders is taking place in Poland, it may be
stated that recent reports indicate that a number of
murders have taken place, of which in some instances
prominent members of political parties have been the
victims.
While this government is fully cognizant of the
unsettled conditions which necessarily existed in Poland
upon its liberation after almost six years of occupation,
and realizes the difficulties encountered by the Polish
Provisional Government in restoring order under such
conditions, nevertheless it is regrettable that the
Polish Security Police appear to have been implicated
in a number of these cases.
In view of the responsibilities assumed by the
United States Government at Yalta and Potsdam, looking
to the establishment of a democratic representative
government in Poland, this government must necessarily
follow closely Polish political developments. The
greatest importance is attached to the fulfillment of
Poland's election commitments and the American Ambassador
has on several occasions brought to the attention of the
Polish Government the fact that the activities of the
Security Police hinder the fulfillment of this commit-
ment. Therefore this government expects that the Polish

assure the freedom and security which are essential to
the successful holding of free elections.
