MEMORANDUM FOR:
THE PRESIDENT
As you may have noticed in the paper, our former Ambassador
to Poland, whose name I believe is Lane, is making some very critical
and extravagant statements about our foreign policy as it has applied
to Poland at Potsdam and since. He has joined the Republican National
Committee and is using this as campaign propaganda. How much good he
is doing among the Polish peoples in Pennsylvania, Michigan, Ohio, and
Wisconsin is a matter of conjecture.

in your Labor Day speech in Milwaukee which, as you know, has a large
Polish population. The announcement of the promotion of Colonel
Francis S. Gabreski to Brigadier General would also have an excellent
effect on the Polish nationals. Gabreski was one of the leading aces
of our Air Force in World War II end is unquestionably the leading
ace of the Korean action. His promotion to Brigadier General would
be entirely in order even if it had no political advantage.
HARRY H. VAUGHAN
