War Crimes. A joint declaration
of the U.S., the U.K., and the
: U.S.S.R. issued November 1, 1943
at Moscow, provided that Germans
: responsible for atrocities
:
against Allied peoples would be
: sent for trial and punishment
: to the countries where the crimes
: were committed.
:
Six days after the close of
: the Potsdam Conference, on
: August 8, 1945, the American,
: British, French, and Soviet
: Governments created an Inter-
:
national Military Tribunal to
: try major war criminals whose
: offenses had no particular geo-
: graphic localization. The trial,
:
held at Nurnberg, lasted from
: November 1945 to September 1946
and resulted in the conviction
of 19 (Goring, Von Ribbentrop,
Streicher, Hess, and others) and
the acquittal of 3 (Schacht,
Von Papen, and Fritzsche). The
prosecution in the individual
zones of lesser war criminals
was provided for in Control
Council Law No. 10 of December
20, 1945.
American authorities in Germany
are still holding trials ( or
supervising the holding of trials
by German authorities) of those
in the U.S. zone who are regarded
as guilty under the Nurnberg
judgment regarding the SS,
Gestapo, etc., or who are charged
with mass atrocities or with
offenses against U.S. military
RESPRICTED
