DECLASSIFIED
THE SECRETARY OF THE NAVY
E. O. 11652, Sec. 3(E) and 5(D) or (E)
WASHINGTON
OSD letter, April 12, 1974
By NLT-
He
, NARS Date 7-16-75
Subject:
Sites for Naval Communication Station, Puerto
Rican Area.
(e) Roosevelt Roads - The only space available for antenna
area is that area on the north end of the reservation.
Upon being investigated it was ascertained that the
area was insufficient to accommodate the required
antenna arrays and radio D/F equipment
(f) Juan Perez Island - so called by virtue of being entirely
surrounded by swamp. This island is located approximately
eleven miles east of San Juan and comprises an area
approximately one by one-half mile. Signal/noise
measurements and conductivity tests were made on this
island, with excellent results. However, this site was
not investigated further due to the fact that a roadway
would be required through the swamp, a distance of
3,000 feet. It was considered that this fact would
outweigh its advantages. Further, it would require the
erection of a number of antenna poles in swamp area on
piling which would present an installation and maintenance
problem.
