Someone fired a revolver shot into the air; the people dispersed, some reassembled, and they were addressed by Communist Minister Patrascanu. He said, "They have shot without shame the peoples' masses. Those who ordered this, those who carried out the orders, those who are really responsible, will pay. General Radescu must go. A Left Government must come, for it alone is capable of weeding out the fascists. Death to the fascists". Later in the evening there was more shooting and a few casualties. At ten o'clock General Radescu addressed the nation by radio. He said that a handful of indi- viduals led by two foreigners, "Anna Pauker and Luca, the Hungarian", were attempting to subdue through terror. Two hours later the General was called to task by the Soviet head of the ACC. We knew then that we were approaching a showdown. The public had responded strongly in favor of General Radescu but, as his position with the people improved, the Communist Party reacted by increasing its demands, distorting facts, and leveling more charges. On February 27, Mr. Vyshinski arrived in Bucharest for the second time and using the same tactics he used on his November visit, requested an immediate audience with the King. In a high voice and while hammering the 11 table with his fist, he demanded the immediate dismissal of General Radescu, and then terminated the audience abruptly by leaving the room and slamming the door after him.
