M-10 3-7-46 DEP ARTMENT OF STATE OFFICE OF EUROPEAN AFFAIRS March 24, 1951 MEMORANDUM To: Mr. Theodore Tannenwald, Jr., The White House Tad: I have looked through Shabad's Geography of the USSR and have checked with several geographers. They tell me that the author is not an outstanding geographer but is believed to be a competent teacher. He knows Russian well and, although their initial impression is the book could be better, they say it is not bad. The fact that it is organized on a regional basis makes it rather difficult reading and deprives it of the possibility of presenting a well-balanced over-all picture. The authorities I checked with said they considered the two follow- ing Soviet texts, both of which have been translated into English and published recently in this country, better presentations of Soviet geography despite the inevitable Soviet propaganda in them: Balzak, Vasyutin, and Feigin: Economic Geography of the USSR, MacMillan 1949. Berg, The Natural Regions of the USSR, MacMillan 1950. Shabad's book does have, however, in its first 90 pages a general over-all survey of Soviet geo- graphy which the President might find it worth his while are of sufficient interest to thumb through. and FR EUR: EE: :FReinhardt:AMR
