IDENTIAL
MEMORANDUM
March 28, 1951
To:
The Ambassador
From:
Milton C. Rewinkel, Second Secretary
Subject: Situation of Baptists in Spain
on March 10, in compliance with your instructions,
I motored to valencia to make a personal survey of the
situation regarding Baptist religious services in the
Valencia-Alicante area, where I arranged to talk with
all six of the pastors of the Southern Baptist Conven-
tion of Richmond, Virginia, who regularly hold services
in various towns of that region. I also participated on
March 11 in the Sunday service of the chapel in Valencia.
on March 17 Mr. Duke and Mr. Rabenold went to Barcelona
where they likewise interviewed Southern Convention Baptist
pastors in that area, visited various chapels and attended
services with a Baptist congregation in Barcelona. In the
course of our conversations with each of the pastors we
obtained a general picture of the present situation affect-
ing this sample Protestant group in Spain which is set
forth below.
We were first of all impressed by the simplicity,
genuine sincerity and complete devotion to their cause
of all the pastors interviewed. Yet they can certainly
not be described as heedless zealots or objectionable
fanatics. They work with meager salaries (average about
$45.00 per month) primarily among people of lowly means
in an atmosphere of uncertainty and hostility engendered
principally by the local Catholic hierarchy in each com-
munity. Their chapels -- if they are fortunate enough to
have a small hall devoted solely to use as a chapel -- are
bare and almost primitive by our standards. Usually, how-
ever, services are held in the homes of members. The
pastors are intelligent men and seemingly patriotic
Spaniards, deeply aware of the social problems and dangers
today existing in Spain. Four of the six in the valencia
area (although only one since 1945) had been in prison at
one time or another because of their religious practices.
