Memorandum for the Ambassador
-
Mr. Williams and Mr. Thompson from the Consular Section,
Mr. Rewinkel of the Political Section, and I, represented the
Embassy at the funeral yesterday afternoon, April 17, of
Mr. Arno Dosch Fleurot, correspondent in Spain for the
Christian Science Monitor. The Embassy's press office had
issued an announcement the day before on Mr. Dosch Fleurot's
death and funeral arrangements, which was carried in the
Madrid press.
Burial took place at the British Cemetery. Mr. Dosch
Fleurot was a Protestant, and the service was conducted by the
chaplain in charge of the Church of England chapel in Madrid,
first in the chapel of the cemetery and then at the grave.
The services were attended by almost a hundred friends, the
majority Spaniards, but including the American correspondents
in Madrid, representatives of the British Embassy and press,
and others. There was no sign of any official Spanish
interference or concern, nor were any Spanish soldiers or police
present.
