E.O. State By DEB 10-15-85 DEPARTMENT OF STATE WASHINGTON April 11, 1952 TOP SECRET SECURITY INFORMATION CONFIDENTIAL SECURITY INFORMATION MEMORANDUM FOR THE PRESIDENT Sub ject: Visit of Prime Minister Erlander of Sweden On January 24 you approved the extension of an invitation to luncheon on Monday, April 14 to Prime Minister Tage Erlander of Sweden. He will have just "NATIONAL come from calling on me at 11 a.m. ARCHIVES AND RECORDS ADMIN." Mr. Erlander came to Washington April 12 and will depart April 16 to return to Stockholm. He has been in the United States since April 3, mainly for the purpose of participating in the centennial celebra- tion of the incorporation of the city of Rockford, Illinois, and of the arrival there of a group of Swedish immigrants. During his stay in the United States the Prime Minister also has visited New York, Chicago, Minneapolis, Ashland (Wisconsin), and Detroit. While his trip is thus entirely unofficial and informal, we consider it important, in the light of Sweden's foreign policy and the fact that the Prime Minister has not previously been in the United States, that he gain the most favorable impression of the country. A biographical sketch concerning Mr. Erlander is attached (Annex 1). United States relations with Sweden are strongly influenced under present circumstances by that country's determination to avoid involvement in any military bloc or alliance. Nevertheless, there is an official Swedish desire, even in matters involving East-West tension, for inconspicuous IDENTIAL SECURITY INFORMATION
