SECRET ИОГТАМНОТИ COMMENTS The countries of the Soviet Bloc are producing nearly every type of machine tool that they need. Their technology is in most cases equal to that of the "US and Others." The "US and Others" may produce a better machine of a particular type, but this cannot be taken as anything but the normal situation existing among competitors with differing re- quirements. The production of machine tools rose during 1950 and 1951 in nearly every country rep- resented in the accompanying chart. The one apparent exception, the USSR, probably re- sults from technological changes involving a shift to the production of heavier and more complex types of machines.
