still possible because China and the USSR do not want war. U.S. leaders are
repeatedly reminded that the fate of Europe hangs in the balance and must be given
primary consideration before a decision is reached.
THE "MONSTROUS STATEMENT" SHOWS THE U.S. WANTS WAR: Berlin and the clandestine
"Free Greece radio" lead the Communist-oriented radios in vehemently denouncing
President Truman's "monstrous" and "criminal" statement. Free Greece adds that
"war is knocking at our door" because of the announcement. The French Communist
L'HUMANITE warns that the use of the bomb would be "the beginning of the destruction
of all life on earth, " but, in the main, there is little scaremongering. The
Communist radios avoid concrete discussion of the critical issues and direct
description of the disastrous consequences; they content themselves with reiterating
that the U.S. seeks war and that the atom bomb cannot conquer territory. They pro-
claim the united strength of the "peace-loving camp" but do not contrast this
strength with the military potential of the Western nations. There is no saber-
rattling but there are frequent attempts to brandish the Stockholm Peace Appeal as
the shield of the "peace-loving world."
