But we also know that the workers and peasants of Poland have covered a
long stretch of road in establishing their people's democratic state and have
accumulated such a great amount of practical experience that they will success-
fully cope with the tasks they have been given and will confidently advance
toward the victory of socialism. In this they can rely, now and in the future,
on the friendship between the Soviet Union and the Polish Republic.
You know, Comrades, that six years ago a pact of friendship, mutual aid,
and cooperation was concluded between the Soviet Union and Poland. The political
significance of this pact is stressed by the fact that this pact bears, on the
Soviet side, the signature of Comrade Stalin. During the signing of this pact
Comrade Stalin expounded the great historic implication of this Soviet-Polish
agreement. "The significance of this pact, = Stalin said at the time, "lies
first of all in the fact that it marks a decisive turning point in Soviet-Polish
relations in the direction of the alliance and friendship already forged in the
recent liberation struggle against Germany. This friendship is now being

past five centuries were marked by alienation, enmity, and frequently by open
armed conflicts. Such relations weakened both our countries and strengthened
German imperialism. The importance of the present pact is that it puts an end
to these old relations and creates a real foundation for superseding the old
hostile attitude by one of alliance and friendship between the Soviet Union and
Poland. These hostile relations prevailed during the time of the old Polish and
tsarist Russia, the time of open armed conflict, and as a result a great deal of
hardship was inflicted on both our nations, particularly the Polish, Ukrainian,
and Byelorussian peoples."
On the occasion of the signing of the Soviet-Polish pact, Comrade Stalin
said: "In the past 25 to 30 years, that is, in the course of the two world wars,
the Germans succeeded in exploiting Polish territory as a corridor in their
attack on the East, as a place d'armes for their offensive on the Soviet Union.
This could happen then because no friendly alliance existed between our two
countries. The old rulers of Poland scorned friendly relations with the Soviet
Union. They gambled and lost. Poland was occupied, its independence nullified.
German troops, as a result of this disastrous policy, knocked at the gates of
Moscow. The significance of the present pact is this: It liquidates the old
