at the beginning of 1918. In his historic speech of 26 October 1917, which expounded the decree establishing peace, Lenin gave us the inspired definition showing wherein the invincible force of the young proletarian State consists-- in the consciousness of the people. Lenin showed how our conception of strength differs in principle from the bourgeois conception of strength. "According to the bourgeois definition, strength means that the masses, obedient to the orders of imperialist governments, submit blindly to carnage," said Lenin. The bourgeoisie only acknowledges a state to be strong when it is capable, with the entire might of the government apparatus, of driving the masses along a path desired by the bourgeois rulers. Our definition of strength is a different one. As we understand it, a state is strong through the consciousness of the masses. It is strong when the masses know everything, are capable of judging everything, and are doing everything consciously. The entire history of the Soviet State, created by the genius of Lenin, shows that it is strong through the consciousness of the masses who are defending their Socialist country with the greatest stead- fastness. "Now, and as of October 1917, we are defenders; we stand for the defense of our country from that day on, because we have shown by deeds our break with imperialism," Lenin pointed out. The Civil War foisted on us by the classes crushed by the Revolution, landowners, capitalists and imperialist states who started an armed inter- vention against our country, ended with the victory of the Soviet Nation. The plans of the American-Anglo-French and other imperialists, the plans of the Hoovers and Urquharts who dreamed of the division and enslavement of Russia, suffered a fiasco. The Soviet people drove out of its territory the foreign invaders who had inflicted hard and unforgettable suffering and enormous material
