IMMEDIATE RELEASE
REAR FLATFORM REMARKS OF THE PRESIDENT AT
POLO, MISSOURI, 8:10 p. ill. , c.s.t.
September 18, 1948.
Thank you for that. It's certainly been a pleasure to have
been able to stop for you tonight. I didn't think I was going
to be able to do it but the railroad finally consented to stop.
I have had E great day today over the whole state of Iowa.
Yesterday, I was over Ohio and Illinois.
The first meeting I had this morning was at E quarter of six
at Rock Island, Illinois, and I've had a meeting nearly every
hour since then.
When I gut to Des Moines, the next Governor of Misscuri met
me there -- Forrest Smith -- and we have been trsvelling together
ever since.
If you are sure to elect Forrest Smith Governor, of course,
there will be no difficulty about the President carrying the
State. I'm sure you will.
I can't tell you how very much I appreciate the cerdiality
of the receptions I have received today and yesterday on this
crusade I am starting to keep the government in the hinds of the
people. That's what it amounts to, and nothing else.
I think the last Congress conclusively proved that the
Republicans are entirely for special privilege, and you cen't
Efford to have that sort of an administraticn in the Government;
and I sincerely hope that every one of you will turn out on
election day and make Forrest Smith the Gevernor of Misscuri,
and fix it SC that your native son can carry the State for the
Presidency.
