Well, it certainly is a\npleasure to see you this morning. I didn't get up quite so early\nthis morning as I usually do. I missed a great crowd back at\nTracy, but l just have to have a little sleep, I can't go all\nnight and all day too.\nThey tell me that this is the richest Valley in the\nUnited States, and I am glad to have a chance to look it over.\nYour interest, of course, is agricultural, and the Party that\nhas been interested in agriculture and that has made it possible\nfor the farmers to have the greatest income they ever had in\ntheir history is the Democratic Party. I don't think the Repub-\nlicans ever did anything specific for the farmer. If they did,\nit was by accident and not intention.\nYou remember the old Farm Board. Well, as soon as the\nDemocrats took over, after everybody was broke and all the\nfarmers in the country were being foreclosed, it was necessary\nfor the Democrats to do something to save the farms for the\nfarmers.\nIn 1932 there were 123 thousand farms foreclosed.\nDo you know how many were foreclosed last year? Just about 800.\nThe farm debt has been reduced fifty percent. The farm\nincome is the greatest ever in the history of this country; and\nthe farmers have 18 billion dollars on deposit in the banks.\nNow that was not an accident. That happened, because\nthe policy of the Democratic Party is to see that the national\nincome is equitably distributed, to see that the working man,\nthe farmer, the small business man and the white collar man gets\nhis fair share of the national income.\nThe Republican policy is to let the big fellows get\nthe big incomes, and let a little of it trickle down off the\ntable like the crusbsfell to Lazarus.\nThat is not the policy of the Democratic Party at all.\nAnd if you will study your history, you will find that that has\nbeen the policy of the two Parties ever since they were organ-\nized.\nThere is only one thing you can do to protect your-\nselves, and that is on the second of November to go to the\npolls and vote for a Democratic Congressman. Mr. White I think\nis the candidate from this District, and they tell me that he\nis a fine man. You ought to elect Mr. White to the Congress;\nand if you do that, of course, you will elect a Democratic\nPresident, and I won't be troubled with the housing shortage.\n1 am sorry to report that my family are not the early\nrisers that I am, and I can't introduce my wife and daughter\nto you at this early hour in the day. I am sorry about that,\nbecause I know you would like to see them.\nThank you very much."
