SECRET The Division of Steam Engineering has three tunnels, "A," "B," and "C," operating from a common compressor chamber of 234 cu ft and 170 lbs/sq in. Air used in the tunnels is passed through an oil fog filter, and through silica gel for moisture removal. Tunnel "A" was built primarily for investigations of dynamic problems (Flygmotor AB), tunnel "B" for aerodynamic problems (Swedish Air Force), and tunnel "C" for ballistic investigations (Bofors). A heating plant for the compressed air has been projected, which, according to calculations, will yield a theoretical mach of 4 with air at 180° C. Tunnel "A" (for gas dynamics) Power Ingersoll-Rand compressor, 170 lbs/sq in. in a 26 cu yd tank Speed mach 1 Flow circuit induction, non-return Throat closed, 2 in. X 6 in. Operation intermittent Temperature control none Pressure control none Humidity control silica gel with reverse flow Working pressure maximum 140 lbs/sq in. Balance system one component, electric Tunnel "B" (for aerodynamic tests) Power same as "A" Speed mach 1.4 to 2.2 Flow circuit induction, non-return Throat closed, 6 in. X 5 in. Operation intermittent Temperature control none Pressure control none Humidity control silica gel with reverse flow Working pressure maximum 140 lbs/sq in. Balance system one component, electric Tunnel "C" (for ballistic tests) Power same as "A" Speed mach 1 to 3 Flow circuit induction, non-return Throat closed, 6 in. X 6 in. Operation intermittent Temperature control none Pressure control none Humidity control silica gel with reverse flow Working pressure maximum 140 lbs/sq in. Balance system one component, electric (2) Aeronautical Research Institute (FFA) The Aeronautical Research Institute has three wind tunnels in operation, providing air speeds from 224 mil/hr to mach 2.5. The low-speed tunnel has no outstanding features. It utilizes a mechani- cal, six-component balance with automatic printing devices manufactured by the Toledo Company of the United States. SECRET 56
