policy. It was only in April, 1946 that the Soviets evacuated the island of Bornholm, an event that the Danes still remember as a practical reminder of the proximity of Soviet power. Future Danish policy toward the USSR will be dictated by circum- stances, but it seems evident from past and present conditions that Denmark will retain its preference for the West for the foreseeable future. The Danish-Soviet trade agreement is a concession to the USSR and represents a considerable increase from prewar trade. From the Danish standpoint, however, the USSR is a market which could provide essential products no longer available from Germany. Realizing the importance of maintaining good relations with the USSR, the Danish public generally has supported the Government in its efforts to improve relations with the Soviet Union. The Government's motives, how- ever, are realistic and stem from no admiration for the Soviet system. f. International Organizations. All parties in Denmark favor full participation in the UN, and Den- mark is also a member of UNRRA, FAO, Bretton Woods, and ECITO. She will do all in her power to promote international cooperation.
