50 ECRET 1822 Brazil proclaims independence after Court returns to Portugal. 5 October 1910 Portugal is proclaimed a republic after military revolt. 1914 Portugal enters World War I on side of Allies. 28 May 1926 Estado Novo, the present regime, is brought into power by a military revolt. 9 July 1926 General Carmona assumes full powers. March 1928 Carmona is elected President of Republic. 27 April 1928 Salazar enters government as Minister of Finance. 5 July 1932 Salazar becomes Prime Minister. 11 April 1933 Constitution of corporative state is published. March 1939 Treaty of Friendship and Non-Aggression signed with Spain. September 1947 Portugal included in ERP Program. 2 February 1948 Signed agreement permitting US use of Azores bases for three to five years. September 1948 Spanish-Portuguese Treaty of Friendship and Non-Aggression renewed for ten years. 4 April 1949 Portugal signs Atlantic Pact. SECRET
