Weatner: 1800/08 (KT) to 1800/09 (KT). High overcast from 16,000\nto 22,000 feet, broken to overcast low clouds from 2,000 to 9,000 feet, visi-\nbility 6 to 8 miles in rainshowers over southern Korea, becoming by 1000\n(KT) high overcast from 19,000 to 21,000, broken low clouds from 3,500 to\n5,500, with unrestricted visibility. North of Taejon-Taegu line, broken\nlow clouds, 2,000 to 5,000 feet, becoming scattered by 1200 (KT), visibility\nunrestricted. Forecast: 2100/09 (KT) to 2100/10 (KT). Unlimited ceilings\nand visibility over Korea except for low overcast, 1,000 to 3,500 feet, over\nwestern and central portions from 0400 to 0800, becoming scattered low\nclouds, 3,500 to 5,500 feet, visibility 8 miles by 1000 for remainder of\nperiod. The enemy launched an attack against the U.S. 34th Infantry\nRegiment's positions south of Chonan the night of 7 July (KT). After an\nall night fight, the 3d Battalion was trapped near Chonan. Since mid-morn-\ning of the 8th, the 3d Battalion has not been in communication with the\nUSAFIK Commander and is presumed, by FECOM, to be encircled. The\ncommander of the 34th Infantry Regiment was reportedly killed in an attempt\nto open a path to the encircled battalion. The U.S. 1st Battalion, 34th Infan-\ntry Regiment, held its position south of Chonan until dark on the 8th (KT)\nwhen it started to withdraw along a road running south and west toward\nKongju, with the enemy in pursuit. By 2310/08 (KT) the 1st Battalion was\nreported approximately 4 miles north of Kongju, with the enemy still in\nenergetic pursuit. At 1500/08 (KT), Company A of the U.S. 78th Tank Bat-\ntalion, an unidentified battery of 155-mm. howitzers, and a South Korean\nEngineer Battalion were in position at a previously mined bridge over the\nKum River at Kongju, where the river is not fordable.
