TOP SECRET
*b. The afternoon of 7 July (KT), a force of approximately 1,000
enemy troops crossed the Ansong River, supported by 40-60 tanks. FE-
COM believes it is strongly probable that the enemy will launch an envel-
oping movement between Chonan and Chinchon. According to FECOM,
the discrepancy in strength between the advanced U.S. elements and the
enemy 1st, 3d and 4th North Korean Divisions, with armored support,
makes the combined frontal and enveloping action of the enemy an extremely
serious threat to the U.S. forces. (FECOM) (SECRET)
*C. The enemy has captured Chungju and is engaged with South
Korean forces at Chinchon. Two and possibly three North Korean Divisions
are operating on the U.S. right flank. Should the enemy break through the
South Korean First Corps, it will place strong enemy elements on a good
road net which leads to the U.S. right flank and is astride corridors to
important installations at Taejon via Chochiwon or Chongju. (FECOM)
(SECRET)
d. The situation in Korea, according to General MacArthur at
2337/08, is critical. To date U.S. efforts against enemy armor and mech-
anized forces have been ineffective. Enemy armor is of the best", and
the service thereof, according to qualified observers, unsurpassed in
World War II. They further state the enemy's infantry is first class. The
enemy force increasingly appears to be a combination of Soviet leadership
and technical guidance, with Chinese Communist ground elements.
U.S. troops, states General MacArthur, are fighting with valor
against overwhelming odds of more than ten to one. To build up sufficient-
ly "to hold the southern tip of Korea is becoming increasingly problemati-
cal"
General MacArthur strongly urges that in addition to the U.S.
forces already requisitioned, an army of at least four divisions, with all
its component services, be dispatched to his area without delay by every
means of transportation available.
"The situation has developed into a major operation", accord-
ing to General MacArthur. (CINCFE) (SECRET)
e. As of 1200/08 (KT), CINCFE reported that enemy troops and
tank concentrations in the east coast area suggest that preparations are
under way for a drive in the direction of Pusan or, possibly, a wide flanking
envelopment of the main battle area to cut the important communications
junction at Taegu. (CINCFE) (SECRET)
