Weather: Low overcast over east coastal areas. Visibility unrestricted except for east coast and for rain showers in the mountains. Forecast: Generally little change. Visibility ten miles, reduced in coastal areas. 2. Soviet Participation: Negative. 3. Operations: ENEMY SITUATION a. Two North Korean regiments attacked elements of the U.S. 19th Infantry Regiment approximately 8 miles west of Chinju forcing friendly forces to with- draw from Chinju. 1,000 North Korean troops moved south from Hadong to the Island of Namhae, Moving east from Hadong a column led by 12 tanks approached Chinju. (FECOM) (SECRET) b. 1,000 North Korean troops forded the Hwang River in a movement toward Kwonbin Subsequently, a strong force attacked positions of the 17th ROK Regi- ment in this area. (FECOM) (SECRET) C. Two battalions of the 8th North Korean Regiment advancing north on the Kochang-Kunchon road attacked the 3d Battalion of the U.S. 21st Infantry Regiment in the vicinity of Chirye. The enemy was compelled to withdraw from this area by the combined counterattack of the U.S. 8th and 5th Cavalry Regiments. (FECOM) (SECRET) d. The 3d North Korean Division supported by tanks and artillery exerted continuous pressure against the 1st Cavalry Division 6 miles east of Hwanggan. Simultaneously, the 2₫ North Korean Division pressed an attack against the north flank of the 1st Cavalry Division and frontally against the 2d Battalion of the U.S. 35th Infantry Regiment. The combined efforts of the 2d and 3d North Korean Divisions effected limited penetrations of the north flank.
