P--Oh, that's one of the reasons he's fought. Heavens, if he
wouldn't do that, well, he shouldn't be over there.
J--Uh, huh. Do you suppose he.. do you suppose he could get
I said, well I assume you wouldn't be asked unless you
were given a free hand to have your assistants, etc. Isn't
that true?
P--Yes. Are you thinking of the GONIFF (Thief)?
J--What?
P--Are you thinking of the GONIFF?
J--The GONIFF?
P--Yes, of the firm of CHAVER (Friend, Comrade), GONIFF (Thief)
AND GOY (Gentile). (Referring to JUDGE SAMUEL ROSENMAN,
OSCAR COX and an indesignated Gentile)
J--(Laughed) No, well, I was thinking of him, too.
P--What?
J--What? I was thinking of that he might want GENE ROSTOW (Phon.),
and
P--Instead of the GONIFF.
J--Yes.
P--Well, that would meet with great pleasure on the part of my
chief.
J--Really?
P--Because he has intense distaste for the GONIFF.
J--Really?
P--Oh, yeah.
J--Oh, really.
P--Uh, hum. The poor CHAVER, what's he going to do?
J--Say, what do you think of that?
P--Well, I knew it was in the word. I thought you and I talked
about it.
J--Sure.
P--I thought we talked about it some time ago.
J--Well, what is he going to do?
P--Well, I.. so far as I can see he's doing little or nothing.
J--He isn'
he isn't the ghost, is he?
P--Well, no, what he does is..is not.
on, not on verbal emin-
ations, but on written emanations he sometimes takes a
draft and tinkers with it a little bit, which is harmless
and all right, which is not a full-time occupation.
J--Matter of fact
P--May be a good form of psycho-therapy.
J--(Laughs) I was perfectly. I thought the letter was a little
bit sickening, you know.
P--Which one?
J--Oh, "Aye, aye, Sir."
P--Oh, yes. Do you think he said that himself? Do you think he
saw to that himself.
J--I don't know. It's awful, wasn't it?
P--Who do you think wrote the other letter?
