LAUCHLIN CURRIE to TOM CORCORAN. (The following conversation
has reference to the Philip Jaffe Case and the defendant, John
Stewart Service of the State Department.)
TC--I did a lot of checking on this thing.
LC--Yeah.
TC--And I checked with probably the ablest man in the town.
LC--Yeah.
TC--Now this fellow (GODFREY MUNTER, former President of District
Bar) isn't one of the boys around the town who can give a
guy an ulcer in the stomach. But he is on he is a very
respected conservative side of the street fellow who was
formerly a president although it was by succession to a
Vice-Presidency and some other things. He was the presi-
dent of the District Bar Association. He is a Scandinavian
with a hell of a good reputation.
LC--Yeah.
TC--NOW I talked with BEN (BEN COHEN?) last night about this and
I said, "If it has to be I am not going to let them push
this kid (SERVICE) around. If we have to get to the ulcer
in the stomach stage, I will be very much tempted to step
in and sock myself without charging for it." I don't
want to---I want to see -lih- as long as it is in safe hands
for the minute and I don't believe this case is ever going
to be tried.
LC--Oh really.
TC--And you don't either. Uh--I would rather work around on the
edges of this thing for a day or so to see if I can liquidate
the whole God-Damned thing.
LC--Yeah.
TC--And I don't want to be out front because of the interest of
other clients that I have got at the State Department.
LC--Yes, that is what--
TC--Unless I have to. But if we have to, Loch, I am very m
LC--It may be embarrassing for you on the other business.
TC--What is that?
LC--It may be embarrassing for you for a client you have got in
the past too.
TC--That is right and I have got to be awfully carefully. But
I can back-stop this thing.
LC--Now some other people have gotten interested in this in
the meantime.
TC--Who are they?
LC--WAYNE COY (Phon.), and GLADIO (Phon.)
TC--Who is he.
LC--He is in the Budget Bureau, and then he was over with W.P.B.
TC--Yeah.
ICC-Pretty sound fellow.
TC--Yeah.
LC--They are suggesting ARTHUR GARFIELD HAYES.
