TC--On the front page of the Star yesterday. It had this whole
St. Louis Post-Dispatch; that WINANT is going to France;
that CAFFREY (Phon. ) is coming back--I don't know whether
to be Under-Secretary or not; that STETTINIUS is going to
London and JIMMY is going up and FRANCIS is going to Italy.
BC--We'll see what we will see.
9:41am
BILL YOUNGMAN to MR. TAUBE. TAUBE said "we " are going to have
a meeting of the gang to find out how we are going to set up our
own affairs here and no one is happy. "We" don't like the setup
because it isn't what we had hoped and the boys don't feel there
is enough promise or strength in this thing to tie into any
program. So that leaves us high and dry. I, myself, am a bit
disillusioned, particularly after listening to the SOONGS and
recognizing how much work lies ahead, hemming and hawing. I
don't think I want to work on a promise of what the Chinese may
do after that period. In the meantime I have to turn down my own
opportunities and curtail them. I don't feel this is a good
business deal and I don't feel that any other engineering organ-
ization would even look at it. TAUBE agreed to come down to
talk to YOUNGMAN about it right away.
9:52am
HENRY (GRUENWALD?) to CORCORAN.
C--Yes, sir.
H--How are you?
C--Fine
H--Did you have a good trip? Did you get your room?
C--Yeah. You were good. Thank you. You got me a suite. You
embarrassed with my magnificence?
H--That's all right, Tom. Like a second honeymoon. I saw the
"shadow" and he told me a very interesting story that I
don't quite want to repeat over the telephone. I mean,
everything is fine but rather curiously interesting. He
said that fellow W sent for him. He said that fellow S had
seen W. He said, "You know, I got a lot of stuff--we had
a lot of stuff in that 62 page report about ELLIOTT." So
W said, "Why the hell didn't you tell me about it. " He
said that he didn't think it was of any importance at the
time. "well, he said, "I think you have been holding out
on me." oh, Christ, he had a hell of a battle with him.
So then he sent for the shadow and asked the shadow why he
didn't tell him about this thing. The shadow said that
he thought S had showed it to him and told him about it.
Well, he says, you ought to get an income tax on somebody--
I don't know whose it was but it wasn't yours. Then he
said that he understood there was a tieup there with the
A & P store and chain stores, and one thing and another,
all the setup, etc., while you at the time had more or less
an interest in behalf of it.
