    "ocrText": "CO SUMMARY\nWashington, D. C.\nJune 21, 1945\n5:05pm\nMRS. BEHAN to D. WORTH CLARK stating thats has a wire from\nGAEFUSS (Phon.) which reads as follows: \"It has been rumored\nhere that there is a sale pending of Washington Water Power\ninterests. Some of their holdings are located in our state.\nI wish you would find out for me personally if there is any\ntruth in this rumor. I am asking for this information so that\nI may determine how it might affect the welfare and future\ndevelopment of the state.\" CLARK said he too had received the\nsame wire and that CORCORAN could keep that one there at his\noffice. O.K.\n5:10pm\nJUDGE THURMAN ARNOLD to CORCORAN saying that ED LEVY is going\nto the University of CHICAGO unless he gets something in Wash-\nington. He has worked hard and deserves some recognition after\nall these years. ARNOLD told CORCORAN he felt that if LEVY was\noffered the Assistant Solicitor Generalship, he'd stay in Wash-\nington. He has done good work and is entitled to some recognition.\nTOM agreed to that. ARNOLD said he talked with TOM CLARK and\nthe latter is agreeable. CORCORAN asked about HUGH (FULTON?)\nand ARNOLD said that HUGH wanted the Solicitor General job. ARNOLD\nasked that CORCORAN speak to LINDEN JOHNSON about it and CORCORAN\nsaid he would get to work on it right away.\n5:55pm\nASSISTANT SECRETARY MIKE STRAUS (Phon.) of Interior Department\nto CORCORAN, who asked what the A.P. dispatch was. STRAUS has\nonly the Star and U. P. dispatches, but he had not seen the A.P.\ndispatch. STRAUS read the Star and U.P. dispatches which quoted\nTRUMAN as stating today that the rumors of his replacing ICKES\nin the Interior Department were the first he had heard of it and\nthat he did not contemplate such a change. STRAUS and CORCORAN\ncomment that that is interesting. They thought ICKES' interview\nwith the press today was \"swell. \"He did a good job.'\n9:15pm\nVIRGINIA DARE (Phon.) to PEGGY (personal chatter), then to\nTHOMAS CORCORAN, saying, \"PM called me up a few minutes ago and\ntold me that ABE FORTAS (Phon. is being fired from the Interior\nDepartment because he got a Negro elevator girl fired. I called\nABE and he seemed sort of defenseless. You see, these Southern\nguys have no political support.\"\nC--I don't believe it. IS PM running this story? That ICKES\nis firing him because of the elevator girl?\nD--I don't know. I got the story that ICKES is staying on at\nInterior on condition he fire ABE --\nC--I don't believe it."
