- 3 - KEFFER (Phon.) called me and told me that you are a good diplomat. C--Well, it's out. P--Now, I'm having breakfast with BOB tomorrow. C--YOU can see, can't you, how bad that situation is getting? P--Yeah. C--It's gettin' there fast. Let me ask you something. Ah, do you know JOHN LINDERMAN (Phon.) over at the OPA? P--Slightly, yeah! C--Who is he, Pritch? P--He works for DICK GILBERT. That's about all I know about him. C--Ah, that means he's a pretty smart cookie. P--Yeah! Oh, I've always had a very good impression of his ability, Tom. C--Yeah! What was his relationship to STONE over there, do you know? P--To STONE? KEITH (Phon.) STONE? I didn't know he had any. I don't know. C--They broke away, somewhere. Where did PEPPER'S asking me for some help in a situation over there and I just want to make sure what kind of a fellow I'm talking to, that's all. What was he before he went with DICK, do you know? P--Haven't any idea. Just an economist, ah C--From where, do you know? P--He's a southerner, but I don't know much else about him. I know him entirely through DICK. C--Yeah! Well, DICK'S over with you now. P--No, no. DICK's still there. DICK would be helpful. C--Ummm! How old is he? P--Oh! I'd say he's a fellow around thirty. C--Well, he's in your group, then. P--That's right. C--Ummm! Ahhh! Do you think he's the kind of a fellow before I take on something, before I decide to take on something, this is for CLAUDE (PEPPER) how, is he the kind of a fellow that can add, subtract, multiply and divide? P--That can? C--Yeah! p--on! Yes! Does CLAUDE- is this something that CLAUDE wants to get done in OPA or something he wants his committee to do? C--No, it's one of these eternal questions of adjustment, you know, where P--He wants to get somebody's price raised. C--Well, where they're gonna raise subsidiary price under these people and that will wipe out the profit margin. But I mean, what I'm wondering about is whether LINDERMAN is the kind of a fellow who understands who will understand--- these inter-relationships and furthermore, do something about them.
