The DR. then asked in what capacity BEN COHEN would be going to Europe. He said that he had spoken with COHEN today and that COHEN was not sure he was going to Europe today. YOUNGMAN said that he would be going to Europe "as an assistant". 5:00 PM Mr. MITCHELL in Chicago to CORCORAN, who is not there. CORCORAN is to contact Chicago Operator #47 when he comes in at 6:00 P.M. OK. 5:10 PM Mr. FILYHOW (phonetic) in New York City to CORCORAN, who is not in, telling that former will reach him later. OK. 5:20 PM Unidentified MAN to CORCORAN, who is not in, telling Mrs. BEHAN that he has a message he wanted to give CORCORAN. CORCORAN will be in at about 6:00 P.M. 5:33 PM LEO CROWLEY to learn that CORCORAN is not in. They will have CORCORAN reach him at 6:00 P.M. today. OK. 5:45 PM Mr. MYRON ZOBAL (phonetic) to Mr. JOHN NASON (Attorney in office of BILL YOUNGMAN) (The former is in New York City), to say that he is running 60,000 on each issue. They discuss the paper shortage and a new order permitting magazines to use more paper. ZOBAL says he won't violate L-244 and won't do anything in violation of the quota. NASON said he's going to "feel them out on it". When ZOBAL gets back to New York he will call BILL. MYRON says he's going to move cautiously from now on. NASON said the Federal Register this morning contained an Amendment to L-244, which increases the 5 per cent newsprint cutoff. 6:05 PM JACK NASON to DON, asking for names of the Directors of U.T.C. DON did not know but "ARCHIE LA HEAD (phonetic)" said DON will be here in the morning. DON asked FRANK, who did not know. JACK wants them at once for himself or BILL so DON will call the Supply Commission and find out and let JACK or BILL know. 6:10 PM DON to BILL YOUNGMAN, telling him that "KK CHEN said he'll call early in the morning with that list." BILL said he knew that one of the officers of U.T.C. was an R.F.C. man and "I'd like very much to know who he is." BILL asked if there was anything new from WHITEY (WHITING WILLAUER, Assistant to Administrator, Foreign Economics Administration) and DON said that WHITEY was going to Manila and that ARTHUR PAUL (Foreign Economics Administrator) is going direct to Chunking, will meet WHITEY there and then both will travel on the circuit down through India and Australia. DON said PAUL "will leave here on the 12th" and spend two days in New Delhi. YOUNGMAN asked what was happening on the textiles and DON said "We are battling like hell to get contracts placed on the third quarter allocation and we've supposedly had a strong support from our own Bureau of Supply at the Treasury.
