PR SUMMARY
Washington, D. C.
July 9, 1945
12:00pm PRICHARD to his MOTHER. She asked PRICH what his status was,
and he replied that it was the same until August 15, and that
then he would probably move on. She asked if "they" had all
gone to the Big Three. He replied that they have. Mrs. PRICHARD
said, "who2" PRICHARD replied "DONALD and BEN, DONALD RUSSELL
and BEN COHEN.' She asked if they had gone, and he replied that
they had. (They continue with personal chatter.)
5:30pm
PRICHARD to Mr. (ISATAH) BERLIN (1st Secretary) of British Em-
bassy. BERLIN says he is sick but that he would be able to "take
the trip. " PRICHARD said he'd be in after dinner. PRICHARD said,
"You should immediately call KISCO KATE at ADams 6726, because
she wants to talk with you." She and PRICHARD were going to have
dinner with BERLIN. BERLIN said HAROLD STEIN talked highly of
PRICHARD and thought HARRY WHITE (Assistant Secretary of Treasury)
would survive. PRICHARD and BERLIN agreed MARK (MARQUIS) CHILDS
(Newspaper writer) doesn't know anything, is a "complete dope,"
"
but a nice dope. BERLIN said CHILDS was hostile to some people,
people "who pressed the button. " PRICHARD said, "What about
Vinson?" BERLIN said, "No nothing against him. Nothing against
BYRNES." BERLIN said CHILDS was really looking forward to what
would happen next, with VINSON and BYRNES in control of things.
BERLIN wanted to know if "he'd" drive out ARCHIE (ARCHIBALD MAC
LEISH, Assistant Secretary of State) and PRICHARD thought not,
but thought ARCHIE would go, also WILDER FOOTE. (Assistant Sec-
retary of State for Drafting). But PRICHARD said no one would
be dismissed until after the conference. PRICHARD asked BERLIN
if he thought SAYCHES (Phon.) wanted to get into the Department.
BERLIN said yes. PRICHARD said he, SAYCHES, had been calling
PRICHARD ever since VINSON was appointed.
