3:15pm
CORCORAN to MR. (ALFRED T.) HOBSON at R.F.C., EXecutive 3111.
CORCORAN asked if JOHN or CHICK is in town. HOBSON said that
JOHN is but that CHICK won't be in town for about 3 weeks. HOBSON
then said that a friend of TOM's wanted to talk to him, and an
unidentified man came on and asked TOM if he'd like to be chair-
man of the S.E.C. CORCORAN said he would for $100,000.00 "after
taxes." CORCORAN asked if the man and GANTZ (GANSON PURCELL,
Chairman of S.E.C. ?) are having trouble. The man said they
always are having trouble. CORCORAN asked if DAVE (CORCORAN) had
contacted the man and he replied not yet. Man will call CORCORAN
tomorrow morning about lunch together tomorrow.
3:20pm
MAX TRUITT, of Cummings and Stanley (Law Firm) to CORCORAN.
CORCORAN said he heard "your boy friend's (JOHN SNYDER ?) name"
mentioned yesterday in DON RUSSELL's office as a successor to
VINSON as Director of War Mobilization and TOM wondered if he
wanted it. MAX said HANNEGAN was "red hot" for him for the
Treasury job and even for "any job he'll take for the simple
reason he's strongly in favor of getting all the strength we can
and he frankly didn't think the guy would get any Congressional
districts carried for us next November. CORCORAN said, "You
mean FRED?" and MAX said, "Yeah." TOM said, "Well, there was
another inside track. I've always told you about that, it was so
inside that it was certain to go through." MAX said, "Yeah,
SAM, " and CORCORAN agreed. MAX stated that SAM failed because
he "didn't get his name sent up and it's worrying the poor guy
to death." TOM said there "was no worry about it" whereupon MAX
said that "GEORGE (KILLIOM ?) is mad, SNYDER is heartbroken and
the other guy wasn't for him in the first place." TOM stated,
"You mean JOHN SNYDER wasn't for him. He wanted it for himself,
didn't he?" MAX said, "Why sure, he's heart broken. And I think
with a good deal of justification. Here he was all set to be
made president of that bank on June 1 and that was a lifetime
job with $60,000.00 on the line every year as a minimum. I'm
sure he thought he was gonna get that. Although I think he's
such a good loyal fellow, he'll just keep his mouth shut and go
right on." TOM said, "Well, SAM (RAYBURN ?) was too strong for
it; SAM's got two now, TOM (?) CLARK and VINSON. MAX said,
"I don't think SAM got CLARK." TOM stated, "He says he did."
TRUITT: "Well, I think the fellow that got him (TOM CLARK ?)
is a man in St. Louis by the name of ADOLPHUS BUSCH (Phon.) the
Third, who has tremendous Texas interests and he has a fellow
named TONY BEAUFORT (Phon.) who is an extremely powerful political
guy." CORCORAN believes BURTON will get the next Supreme Court
appointment. MAX tells him the rumor he and JIM BARNES are going
into partnership is wrong. BARNES is with THURMAN HILL (Phon.).
formerly of the Treasury. CORCORAN says (ABE) FORTAS is joining
THURMAN ARNOLD.
