C--LESLIE BIFFLE.
H--LESLIE BIFFLE?
C--Absolutely. You got to have more to go to work on it than
yourself. You gotta' have substantially your committee.
(Military Affairs Committee ?)
H--I'll go to work on that with the Shadow. I understand that.
C--But you gotta move fast.
H--I'll go to work at once. At once.

CORCORAN to WORTH CLARK. They continue their conversation,
WORTH saying he was sorry he had to interrupt it previously
(at 11:20 A.M. today):
CORCORAN to CLARK. Latter said BOB ELDER called him from
Cambridge and that's why he couldn't finish the conversation
previously. WORTH said he explained all this Lever thing to
BROWNWELL yesterday. They talked about the SILVERSTEIN (Phon.)
matter. TOM saying, "you ought to send for the guy and
work to get the kind of guy in the place where you'll need help
on that (In war Department ?) and I think you ought to get back
to your friend who used to be secretary (LESLIE BIFFLE, Secretary
of Senate) to the honorable body of which you are still an
honorable member emeritus, the idea that the other choice in this
matter is FELIX's man (JOHN J. McCLOY, Assistant Secretary of
War ?) and distinctly much more so than his boss." CLARK asked
if that was right and TOM said "yes, that McCLOY and FELIX
(FRANKFURTER ?) are very close. McCLOY is a Republican." They
discussed the pros and cons of it, as to the SILVERSTEIN matter
-- WORTH says, as respects to taxes on the retainers, he can
work it out all right and TOM suggests putting the Lever fee in
next year's income. WORTH said that he felt that on the SILVER-
STEIN matter it was worth talking to McCARTY (Phon.) -- A man of
quality. TOM suggests however that WORTH have BILL BERRY (Phon.)
check on McCARTY. WORTH said it would be all for cash. TOM
said it would be good publicity if in WORTH's name.
