12:23 PM CORCORAN to TOM CLARK (Continued): CLARK: You can do that any time. CORCORAN: All right. Let me come in right after luncheon then tomorrow. CLARK: You don't have to call me. CORCORAN: O. K. CLARK: Say, have you heard anything about this SMATHERS' boy (Former Senator WILLIAM H. SMATHERS of New Jersey)? CORCORAN: Well, I'm interested in him for this reason. I think an awfully lot of people have always felt lawfully sorry for the Senator--you know--that includes a lot of people that you want to have good friends of yours and that are good friends of yours--like HUGO BLACK and that crowd. SMATHERS, you know, comes from Alabama. He's lawfully close to LISTER (HILL?) and he's awfully close to the rest of them. I have a hunch that the Senator himself sort of plumbers (phonetic) things a little by talking too much, and all the rest of it. But all of that gang have always felt terribly fond of him and he's an lawfully good ally. So when he came in all out of breath the other day about this problem of his nephew and all the rest of it and asked me to call you, I called GRACIE (STUART' Secretary to TOM CLARK). I told GRACIE afterwards that I simply had to do it. Since then he's been in again. I think it's something that can be worked out. I think--and I'm talking sheer politics now--I think it's something that's probably worthwhile trying to work out. But when you say do I--I don't know the boy from Adam, TOM. I just know the old Senator from New Jersey, that's all. CLARK: Well, I tell you. PEPPER called me and told me he'd like to get him down there as Assistant U. S. Attorney and--or up here-- that then he--I suppose it's non-confidential--he said he had in mind he might run for Congress. (Against Congressman PAT CANNON of Florida). CORCORAN: That's right. He looks just like Congressman LYNDON JOHNSON. Did you see him? He isn't quite as good looking as LYNDON. CLARK: He's a little younger but very much alike. CORCORAN: That's right. CLARK: So I got hold of--at that time BARD (former Assistant Secretary of Navy) was over at Navy and so he told me it looked like they might be able to get him out --that he was being transferred to JAG (Judge Advocate General) office. So I didn't hear anything-- BARD went on out the other day I called over and talked to ARTEMUS GATES (Assistant Secretary of Navy) and then STRUV HINSEL (phonetic) called me and he said that the boy was only 31 or something of the kind, and they couldn't let him go, and I said, "Well, the boy tells me that he's really not doing work that he's capable of performing." CORCORAN: He was the Provost Marshal down at Cherry Point (Marine Base) wasn't he? Something like that? CLARK: Oh, he don't do a damn thing. As a matter of fact, TOMMY, there's hundreds of them in the same goddamned shape. CORCORAN: I know it. That's where I think your happiest hunting ground is over there.
