HAROLD ICKES to CORCORAN, (Continued):
C - That's very, very interesting.
I - Yeah.
C - That would be impossible.
I - I should think so.
C - Certainly. Oh, how interesting.
I - Yeah.
C - All right, sir.
I - All right.
C - Thank you.
I - 'Bye.
4:09 PM
CORCORAN to FOWLER HARPER (Solicitor) Interior Department, who was busy.
HARPER will contact CORCORAN this afternoon.
4:10 PM
BILL SHUBERT (phonetic) (whose home is in Bryn Mawr) in Philadelphia, to
CORCORAN. BILL asked TOM, "Are you going to change your habits any and
appear at one of these Brown's functions in Philly?" TOM said he didn't
think so, not for the next six months or until after January 1. BILL
said the "boys" had discussed it at lunch. They discussed the war
situation, stocks, trust laws, and liberalization of trust indentures.
TOM said that V-J Day will be by September 1, at the latest. BILL said
he felt that "we have much stronger hands at the reins of the horse now,
you know" and reconversion may be effected more rapidly.
4:15 PM
JOHN SONNETT to CORCORAN. Latter said, "I'd love to see you about
5 o'clock." JOHN said, "All right, I'll be by.'
4:16 PM
Mr. McCASHEN to JACK NASON asking if anything is happening. No. JACK
said he's meeting his technical men tomorrow. McCASHEN said he and CHEN
(who just got back), who is head of the China food business, have come
to an agreement as to an equal split of 100 units each. Therefore, food
will get half and China agriculture will get half. They discuss UNRRA's
part in the negotiations and the names of various Chinese businessmen
engaged in the purchase of McCASHEN'S gas engine. Allis-Chalmers is
attempting to sell the Chinese agricultural group in China, and dealing
with a Chinese named DR. BUCK. McCASHEN is to see the Russian specialist
Monday. His deal with them has been dragging for about a year and now
they have clearance from Moscow, said McCASHEN. McCASHEN is in Room 838
of the Willard Hotel in Washington.
4:40 PM
GARLAND (phonetic) from the War Department to CORCORAN. GARLAND said,
"I'm the fellow that's badgering you." CORCORAN told him that he was not
badgering him that they had a good friend and if he asks me to let you
badger me it's all right. CORCORAN asked him if he was going to be in
town tomorrow and GARLAND said he had an appointment in the morning and
is stuck at the War Department tonight. CORCORAN told him to call again
at 6:00 P.M today and he would see what he could do.
4:56 PM
FOWLER HARPER (Solicitor, Department of Interior) to CORCORAN. Latter
asked if he was watching that bill up in the house. FOWLER said that the
report "was supposed to come out this afternoon" but he didn't know
"whether it did or not". CORCORAN said: "Maybe before they adjourn?"
FOWLER said: "They may," but he was keeping his eye on it. CORCORAN agreed
it "needs some watching."
