ERNIE CUNEO (phonetic), in New York City, to CORCORAN asking "what's new?"
CORCORAN said that Jap peace rumors are "all over the place," and CUNEO
said that such rumors are "more than usually valid." CORCORAN said that
he thinks it will be September 1st at the latest and CUNEO agreed. CUNEO
asked him what else he knew, and the following conversation took place:
T - This talk about EMIL SCHRAM (President of New York Stock Exchange)
coming back here, which is terribly interesting, has a real foundation
behind it--they asked him. But he's got the problem (1) whether the
stock exchange would let him keep his contract and come down here on
lend lease, for one thing, and (2) whether the government could accept
him under those circumstances.
E - Sure.
T - Then, of course, FRED VINSON and JOHN SNYDER will be sworn in tomorrow,
and STUART SYMINGTON becomes the real head of Surplus Property net.
You saw DREW's (PEARSON) story on ED PAULEY this morning?
E - No, what did he say?
T - About the grain futures?
E - About the what?
T - About the rye market.
E - Oh. Was ED in that?
T - Yeah. You ought to read that one too.
E - I read that.
T - There are all kinds of--the town is going through a very desperate
effort to shake down that I don't think is going to work itself out,
particularly with this Jap business. It isn't going to settle down
until next January 1st. This is going to be a quaking bob until then.
E - TOM, what is TOM--what is CLARK going to do?
T - TOM?
E - Yeah.
T - Well, you saw he sent (HAROLD) JUDSON's name up yesterday?
E - For what?
T - For Assistant Solicitor General, which means his personal counsel.
E - Who's going to go over as Solicitor General?
T - I understand the last was that they're just simply going to leave
CHARLES FAHY on leave so they won't have to settle the impossible
problem of filling it.
E - Yeah.
T - He was going to come back on the first of September, his present status
being that of leave, and resign. But I understand now they're going to
keep him there and avoid having to decide it.
E - Who'll go up to the court, TOM?
T - The talk right now is BOB PATTERSON (Under-Secretary of War).
E - No. BOB PATTERSON and JAMES FORRESTAL have sort of got a deal to
run for Senator and Governor of New York. That's what I hear.
T
- Well, I know you hear that. That may be their private understanding.
But down here, you see, if they're going to put a Democrat over
PATTERSON's head, PATTERSON being a titular Democrat turned from
Republican, they've got to do something for PATTERSON. This thing
