BILL YEAGER to CORCORAN (Continued):
Y - Well that's damn swell of him, isn't'it?
C - And he really said--he really--SAM's O.K. SAM's slow, but god-dang,
he delivers.
Y - And he can do it, don't you think?
C - I think so.
Y - Well, that's fine, TOM. I appreciate it very much.
C - He really was grand about it.
Y - Well, now. What do I do? Just sit to hear from you?
C - Yeah.
Y - All right. I'm gonna--old man GIRARD called me this morning and he's
coming in and--I'm dining with he and MRS. G on Sunday night and I'll
find out about that because there isn't any use of your making a wild
goose chase.
C - That's right.
Y - I mean if he's got something really tangible, why then I'll tell you.
And if he hasn't, why do it?
C - Now, I've got something over at the Comptroller's office that interests
me enormously--something very, very simple. The Roman Catholic Bishop
of Chicago has been fighting for a friend of his who got a raw deal on
a contract out in Denver. He was a Chicago contractor who made the
mistake of going into mountain regions where the whole thing's a closed
racket and where the reclamation bureau just slipped him for his
impertinence in butting into the six company's business. He fought the
thing through the Department of Interior and the thing's over in the
Comptroller's office and, first of all, there was a ruling out of the
Comptroller's office that he was entitled to recover. Then they went
back to the Department of Interior and the Department made the finding
and now they've sent it over to the Comptroller again. And the damn
thing has been drifting along and drifting along. I'm getting
suspicious and the Bishop is getting suspicious that it's being
held up until after ICKES gets out. Is that the kind of a thing
I could talk to (FRANK) YATES about?
Y - Sure.
C - Are you sure?
Y - I'm positive.
C - Would you tell him--would you call him on the phone and just tell
him I may be over within a day or so to talk with him about something.
And don't talk about it over the phone and get it going.
Y - Let me tell you something, TOM.
C - Yeah.
Y - Why don't I tell him--see if this will work--that you drop by his
house and see him on your way home.
C - I may do that.
Y - I think it's better.
C - Yeah.
Y - If he'll do it. Maybe he'd rather you do it the other way.
C - Now, let me ask you one more thing. On JULIUS. (JULIUS HOLMES, State
Department)
Y - Yeah?
C - Is JULIUS in charge of the Passport Division?
