District\nCourt vacancy) out, but the Jews are raising so goddamned\nmuch hell that they've got to put another Jew in.\nEC--That's what I hear.\nTC--And who do you think they're going to put in?\nEC--HOLTZOFF.\nTC--Of all the goddamned postering caricatures of monkeys. Did you know that?\nEC--No. (He laughs) I didn't know that.\nTC--TO TOM CLARK, American Legion Post--ALEXANDER HOLTZOFF,\nCommander.\nEC--Well, I was told--a least TOM told me that he thought he'd\nhave to put a Jew in his place. But he said, \"I'm going\nto take care of you. \" Well, of course, I don't know what\nthe hell\nTC--Well, I think what he's going to try to do is move MATT\nMcGUIRE up onto the Circuit bench and put you in MATT'S\nplace. That's what he told me the other day.\nEC--Well, of course, that suits me. But--that's what I heard.\nI didn't know, after that heated executive session yester-\nday, though, that they'd pull MARGOLD'S name out.\nTC--I don't know. You keep me advised whatever you hear.\nEC--Well, I know that CHANDLER and WHEELER had quite a tilt in\nthe Judiciary Committee yesterday.\nTC--What I talked to TOM about yesterday was something else. Have\nyou got anything to do with these State Department cases?\nAre you going to present those?\nEC--No. JIM McINERNEY is handling that, Tom.\nTC--Who is JIM McINERNEY?\nEC--He was, up until LAMARR CAUDLE was appointed, the acting head\nof the Criminal Division. He was TOM's, I think, first\nassistant after HAROLD JUDSON got out.\nTC--Yeah. O.K.\nEC--YOU know what happened before, don't you? This is just be-\ntween the two of us."
