Washington, D. C. CO SUMMARY July 26, 1945 11:00 AM CAROLINE JONES in MISS DICK's office of American Magazine. JONES said she wants biographical material on BEN COHEN. DE FALCO consulted CORCORAN and promised JONES she'd call back at DIstrict 5505. 11:15 AM MISS DE FALCO to ROGER MILLIKEN of DEERE (phonetic) and MILLIKEN at New York to Long Acre 5-5910. MILLIKEN is out for several weeks. She asked for KINGSLEY who may probably be reached at Canal 6-7400. MR. YOUNGMAN talked with KINGSLEY. They discussed the British election, KINGSLEY agreeing that Labor's victory was a bad thing. They then discuss print cloth and OPA regulations. 11:30 AM Senator LISTER HILL to CORCORAN. They engage in small talk about HILL and a man named BEACH who is to have dinner with him. Then HILL asks if TOM was able to reach PURCELL (phonetic). TOM said he would try him again. TOM said that if BEACH would come to his office at 9:45 A.M. (i.e. to TOM's office) on Saturday, they could all go over to see PURCELL at 10:00 A.M. HILL will be there also. The three will see PURCELL in the Tower Building. TOM said BEACH is unaware "what a complicated situation he's in." (It's apparently a utility case). 11:40 AM MR. SEARLES to MISS DE FALCO, who said TOM could see him at 5:00 P.M., this evening. It was finally agreed that SEARLES would see TOM at 5:30 P.M. in TOM's office. SEARLES is an air line representative from the West. 11:43 AM CORCORAN to WILLY MANN (phonetic) in New York City saying, "The earliest I can see PURCELL (GANSON PURCELL, S.E.C.) is Saturday at 10 o'clock. I cannot get up to Philadelphia and he cannot come down." WILLY says that is all right. CORCORAN says, "I wanted FRANK WOOD to call you. The Saturday Evening Post is running a series of three articles intended to be a smear on me. One of them is on the KAISER deal." WILLY says, "Yes, I talked to you about that long ago." CORCORAN says, "Yes, and one is on the STERLING (phonetic) deal and one on the WMCA. KAISER let himself be interviewed by ALVA JOHNSON and I do not know how much he said but I understand it is plenty. Now I do not think these articles will come out as they are not scheduled until past September and the Post is scared stiff on the thing. I wondered on a plain basis of legal representation if you could have written for TODD (possibly of TODD Shipyards) a letter in which you say you have heard of these articles and since they are involved, and I was their counsel, they would appreciate a chance to look at these articles to see that nothing detrimental to them is said, and they have heard many wild stories as to what is said in them about their relationship with KAISER. It is not to protect you or me--just TODD, get it?" WILLY says, "Yes." CORCORAN says, "And a lawyer's letter is written on it and you are merely avoiding unpleasantness. WILLY says, "All right. I will talk to JOHN." CORCORAN says, "The first thing is to talk to FRANK WOOD who is doing the same thing for the Blue Network." WILLY says, "ALVA JOHNSON?" CORCORAN says, "Yes. A-L-V-A." WILLY says, "I told you he was around about six months ago. I was not here and he talked to JOE HAYES (phonetic). We were evasive and told him nothing." CORCORAN says, "What I want is to scare them in a gentlemanly way. I do not care if they tell the truth but I do not want any lies. KAISER is lawfully worried. There is a big WPB investigation blowing up on him. They want me as a witness.
